Love my Nook! Traveling with an eReader

April 28, 2013

“Chris just checked out my 100th book from the library. One hundred!!  In 4 months. Free!!And they all fit in the palm of my hand. I love my Nook!”

If you like to read and travel, I would highly recommend getting a Nook or Kindle: a digital reader. I have a Nook. I am the last person who would have thought I would like an eReader, I love flipping pages. I admit, I do occasionally miss the “feel” of a book.

Oldest on the left, broken in the middle, newest on the right - I still use all of them.

Oldest on the left, broken in the middle, newest on the right – I still use all of them.

Three years into our trip I am actually on my third one. A new “night glow” feature had me buying the second one. Breaking that one had me buying a third. The frame is glued together and all three still work. I stayed with Nook because I am very happy with it.

To get the biggest bang for the buck, join a library that has eBooks available… possibly a larger one. In all of our travels, I have “bought” a total of 3 books. Instead of buying, we check them out from the library. I have checked out over 600 books in 3 years. That is a huge savings (even if you are not traveling). On top of that, it would not have been possible to carry that many books. Very few bookstores here carry books in English and never the ones I want. The Nook is small and thin. I even take it skiing with me in my jacket. There is a color version, but I think the black and white Eink is easier to read in daylight and less tiring for your eyes. We have an iPad for anything we need in color. Recipe books with pictures go on the iPad. You could read your book on your computer or iPad, but there are conveniences to the Nook.

A word of caution: I think the X-ray scanner at the airport may damage Nooks. They claim they don’t, but I had a few problems with each of the Nooks AFTER they went through the scanner. I did ask the TSA guy at the airport this last time if he would just inspect the Nook and avoid the X-ray….the answer was no. Not much you can do about it, but thought I should mention it.

FYI: Since my first Nook was not a Glow Light, I bought a Nook night light clip. Though I no longer use it with my Nook, the light still gets lots of use. I have it clipped to the lamp shade next to the bed. I can quickly find it if I need to get up or to jot something down in my journal.
